Laura Jouan’s background is graphic design, though she often pushes the boundaries of graphic mediums in order to challenge traditional commissions. Over the course of the past year studying Visual Communications at the Royal College Of Art, she has been exploring the structure of the book and it’s value as an object.
For Unbinding The Book, she will be drawing parallels between architecture and books, such as the way we navigate narratives to the way in which the form can be perceived. Titled ‘Monument’, her piece will study the sculptural form of the book whilst exploring the journey one makes when reading a book from cover to cover.
Her books will appear as semi-transparent towers through which you can see specific sections on different pages all at once. Below ,we can see some tests Jouan has been running, using transparent paper.
The towers themselves will be exhibited atop a landscape. Whilst this is currently in the process of being built Jouan has shared some sketches that give some indication of how it will appear.
